Los Angeles, known by its residents as L.A., was founded in 1781 by the Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve and was added to Mexico in 1821. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Los Angeles and California became part of the United States in 1848. Los Angeles is known as the home of Hollywood, which it added in 1910. By 1921, 80 percent of the world’s movie productions were found in the City of Angels. This economy helped protect the city from much of the suffering felt by the rest of the country during the Great Depression. In fact, the city’s electrical needs only rose during this period and you can bet Los Angeles electricians were in great demand.
Los Angeles possesses a large diversity of botanical environments, including wetlands, beaches, and mountainous regions. The city is home to plants, such as the Los Angeles sunflower, that have become rare enough to be endangered. Due to its closeness to the San Andreas fault line, Los Angeles feels a large series of earthquakes, but most are too small to be felt due to their low intensity. Those that are felt are often highly destructive, as evidenced by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. In addition to these quakes, Los Angeles is vulnerable to tsunamis.
