In 1882, Long Beach began forming along the coast. From 1902 to 1910, Long Beach was known the be the fastest growing city in the United States. About 20 years later, Long Beach was struck by a major earthquake which forced the city to rebuild Downtown Long Beach. California State University, Long Beach was founded a few years later which is now a top school in California. In 1996, the Queen Mary celebrates the 60th anniversary of its voyage from England to New York City and one year after that, it celebrates its 30th year of being located in Long Beach. Skipping a few years later, in 2007, Long Beach is the host of the AMGEN Tour of California professional bike race.
